12. Joanna Wilson

Grantown Open Studios

Multidisciplinary Artist (Contemporary Abstract Practice)

Rooted in the Highlands of Scotland, Joanna Wilson’s work moves between intuitive mark-making and spatial composition, evolving from painting into installation and experimental forms.

Her practice balances chaos, control and chance, with a sensitivity to form that echoes the surrounding landscape, alongside structural elements that reflect the urban environments she has lived and worked within.

She studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Wimbledon School of Art. Her practice has since led her to projects and collaborations connected to institutions including the Hayward Gallery and Royal Albert Hall, alongside further study at Yale University. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public and private collections.

In recent years, her focus has expanded beyond the canvas into more immersive and site-responsive work. She co-curated and toured Pledge Process Planet in partnership with the Cairngorms National Park, and continues to explore how art can exist beyond traditional gallery settings – developing a window-based exhibition model that brings contemporary installation into direct dialogue with the street. She is also the founder of the Open Edge Award, supporting artists to take risks and push their practice in new directions.

Alongside her own work, Joanna is the director of OPENSPACE and THE VAULT in Grantown-on-Spey, creating opportunities for artists to exhibit and connect with new audiences. Her studio is based locally, where she balances her practice with family life and an ongoing curiosity for process, material, and the quieter, less visible aspects of making.

Alongside this, she is also co-lead of Grantown Open Studios, working collaboratively to support artists and grow a vibrant, connected creative community in the Cairngorms.
