Angus Grant is a painter, craftsman, and teacher, living in the Cairngorms National Park. He is based at the Spey Bank Studio, a gallery and art space that he co-owns in Grantown-on-Spey
Angus’s work features the lochs, mountains and wildlife of the area. His paintings capture the dynamic interplay of light across these landscapes, reflecting the ever-changing environment of the Cairngorms.
A keen fisherman, Angus enjoys exploring the landscape by kayak, using his time on the water to seek out new views of his favourite spots. This passion is evident in his paintings, which sometimes seek to reveal the world below the surface as well as above.
Angus studied art at Central St Martins School of Art, before studying jewellery design at Middlesex University. Here, he specialised in Japanese-style carving and acrylic. He taught Western Jewellery Design at the National Institute of Jewellery Design in Gujarat. After graduation, he worked as a production jeweller for jewellery designer Kirt Holmes in London.
He returned to the Highlands in the early 2000s to start his own jewellery business, selling directly to retailers and to customers at craft markets across Scotland.
He has worked as an art consultant on the recently built hospital in Aviemore and has undertaken a number of public art projects, independently and collaboratively, with young people.
He and his partner opened the Spey Bank Studio in Grantown’s former Bank of Scotland offices in 2022. The studio includes a gallery, pottery and shop, and regularly runs ceramics classes and curated exhibitions.
Angus is also an art and design teacher in Grantown and a visiting specialist teacher, offering ceramics and printmaking workshops.
